Windows Vista- First Impressions
As a computer repair specialist, its important for me to keep on the cutting edge of technology so I can support my clients. Ive been using the new operating system from Microsoft; Windows Vista for over a month. So, how does Vista compare to past operating systems?
Not bad. Its definitely a different experience, although not too different. Its not a very far leap from Windows XP.
For once Microsoft seems to have released an operating system that doesnt need a year of patches to be usable. It seems to be stable and usable from day one, Ive been using it for over a month, and I havent seen it crash yet. It choked a little bit on my graphics card driver, but then there was a new driver especially suited for Vista, and it seems to work fine now.
The most evident changes is the User Interface, its quite a bit different than the XP version. With the very tight integration with Internet Explorer 7, it seems that Vista is more capable than ever at multi-tasking. The gadgets are really cool too, and I cant wait to see what new and interesting gadgets are developed for Vista in the near future. You just have to get your hands on it, to see the difference, words cant really adequately describe it.
Whats interesting is that Vista comes with voice recognition right out of the box. You can actually use Vista with just your voice. I played around with it a bit, and while its definitely not as usable as the Dragon software, it still can be helpful.
The biggest complaint I have with Vista is that is has pretty high hardware requirements. It really isnt a good idea to upgrade to Vista unless your computer is fairly new. Vista can really sing, if you have enough memory(1GB+) and a fast processor and video card. But, it chokes a bit if you try to do too much when you dont have the best hardware.
So after one month of Vista, I have to say, Im pretty pleased. Its a very fine release from Microsoft that I believe will prove to be quite popular. Its probably not worth it to spend money to upgrade as its not that different from XP. But, is a great choice for any new computers that you purchase.
